An 80s Kid’s Nostalgic Journey from X-Men ’92 to X-Men ’97 (2024)

What does NOSTALGIA mean for brands? &nbsp;It seems more than ever many people wish for a return to simpler times. Let’s not kid ourselves – we feel digital burnout, information overload and (global) crisis fatigue. &nbsp;This is why many brands are now using nostalgia to reconnect with their audiences and remind them why they started using the brand's products or services in the first place.I’ve been a ‘digital ad guy’ for over 20 years. &nbsp;Going a bit further back, say, since the dawn of time, advertising’s goal really hasn’t changed much - stand out, drive some awareness &amp; interest, then generate a response. &nbsp;Go visit your local park space in the spring where Peacocks nail this strategy to perfection, if you’d like a more naturally occurring example!More recently though, a lot of “human” advertising has felt a bit, mundane. "Check-boxed” commercials, recycled elements, overly repetitive &amp; invasive, made-for-ads websites (MFAs), overused-AI…the risk of annoyance is a fine line to success. &nbsp;Remember the Covid-19 Pandemic, how networks pushed out new content FAST just to keep us from cancelling our services, but the quality suffered? &nbsp;Yeah…that kind of mundane.Then, like a blast from Cyclops, Coca-Cola has again shattered expectations with its latest collaboration, teaming with Marvel to create a nostalgia-infused TV commercial experience that in my humblest opinion, is nothing short of Dazzling. Taking a quick mental break, she is suddenly whisked away into an augmented-reality adventure with Marvel characters. &nbsp;I really liked this transition - after all, aren’t comics SUPPOSED to ignite the reader’s imagination? &nbsp;Dang, it even brought back memories of BIG BANG THEORY LoL!The seamless integration of Coke’s timeless charm (and ad budgets) with Marvel comic characters quickly builds a blend of nostalgia and excitement. As the first scene unfolds, X-Men enthusiasts will be put off - we know the Juggernaut is NOT the same size as Godzilla, nor seemingly unable to speak. For those like me, who grew up devouring comic books and watching blockbuster movies come out of those books, seeing my favorite characters share space with Coke evokes a nostalgic sentiment that will directly support pending Marvel theatrical, comic and collectible releases, while keeping the Coca-Cola employment-generating engine alive and well.Conversely, even if you're not intimately familiar with the Marvel (Cinematic) Universe, the commercial's captivating visuals and exhilarating action sequences are more than enough to draw you in. It's a testament to the universal appeal of these iconic brands' ability to forge connections with audiences across generations.<h2>A FEW MINOR ISSUES</h2> A friend, creative designer expert &amp; HULK-level collector commented the commercial has some ambiguity regarding the product itself though. &nbsp;Would consumers know it's about promoting the cans, or was this about movie &amp; comic experiences? &nbsp;Fair enough, but arguably maybe that was the point…Also, pay attention at the grocery store, as it might end up being the same hero on all cans in the box (I need to check this myself). &nbsp;If so, this could have been a major collectibles opportunity - for instance, maybe in every 1000th random box there exists a very limited edition can…a specific hero with maybe just 1000 total in existence to pump up the prize winning opportunities.I know a lot of gigs can challenge the 'ol boredom meter, but working at a comic book shop? Every time I've ever visited my LCS the staff are like superheroes themselves. Always smiling, waving, asking to help, busy doing LCS 'stuff...' Here, factors like historical significance take a backseat to the power of digital scarcity. The common cover variant of Spider-Boy #1, limited to just 400 copies, boasts a minimum price of $36, eclipsing the $10 price tag for the far more abundant Amazing Spider-Man #1, with a staggering 48,000 digital copies in circulation.&nbsp;This trend becomes even more pronounced when examining the "secret rare" cover variants. Spider-Boy #1's "secret rare," with only 40 editions available, commands a minimum price of $1,099, surpassing the $900 valuation for Amazing Spider-Man #1's "secret rare," which has a circulation of 600.This juxtaposition underscores the pivotal role of scarcity in the digital realm. As of this writing, a common cover of this issue sells for a mere $10, while the coveted "secret rare" cover variant, limited to just 250 editions, fetches a much higher $250.Now let's jump to a more recent release: X-Men '97 #1 (2024). This comic, based on the popular Disney+ animated series, features no significant first appearances or key events. In the physical realm, a 9.8 CGC graded copy can be obtained for a mere $80 on eBay. Interestingly, in the digital marketplace, the story takes another unexpected turn. With a total circulation of 1,000 editions, the common cover variant by Todd Nauck is currently selling for $45.85 on the VeVe platform. That's a remarkable four times the value of Black Panther's first appearance in digital format!The "secret rare" cover variant, featuring art by Russell Dauterman, and limited to only 40 copies, boasts an even more impressive floor price of $979.79 – nearly four times the price of the least expensive digital copy of FF52.Scarcity Reigns SupremeThese contrasting examples highlight the power of scarcity in the digital comic market. While Fantastic Four #52 holds a significant historical advantage over X-Men '97 #1 in the physical realm, the newcomer reigns supreme in the digital space due to its limited digital availability.The Collector's TakeawayThe takeaway? You can also earn extra points by completing full sets and owning collectibles with low edition numbers (sub-5%). The system is built to truly reward all the collectors who have spent significant time and money building their collections on the VeVe app.&nbsp;The amount of MCP Points you earn also contributes to your MCP Level and Rank. Your Level continually goes up as you build your collection and your total number of points increases. Your Rank, however, is dynamic and changes based on the number daily points accrued by your collection. There are 22 Ranks ranging from Starter to Master Collector, and only the top 3% of daily MCP Point earners can achieve the rank of Master Collector. You can be bumped down to a different Rank at any time based on where your daily earnings fall in comparison to other collectors. Currently they don’t have much of an impact, but in the future, collectors with higher MCP Levels and Ranks will have access to exclusive features and benefits.&nbsp;Furthermore, the introduction of OMI-to-MCP rewards has added new ways to earn points and another layer of utility for the OMI token. Collectors who hold OMI tokens on the platform will receive daily points corresponding to the proportion of OMI they own relative to the total reward pool. OMI tokens held on the platform will now also allow collectors to earn Bronze Tickets, which can then be used to claim additional MCP Points. This "double-dipping" mechanism allows collectors to maximize their MCP point earnings, as they can accumulate points both from holding OMI tokens and by redeeming the bronze tickets.Earning MCP Points is only half the fun.
