Ready for Epic DC Collectibles at San Diego Comic-Con next week?

When investing in collectibles, or really any market, it can be easy to let emotions cloud your judgment. Most of us have fallen into this trap at least once in our investing careers. Prices are spiking, euphoria is at an all time high, and it feels like things are just going to keep getting better. We know we should sell, but for some reason we don’t. And then soon enough, the shoe drops, and the opportunity to sell in profit is gone.&nbsp; The fact of the matter is that all markets eventually become overbought and all time high prices can’t be sustained forever. Markets eventually have to correct to become healthy again. Ego can play a huge role, as people often see their investment decisions as a reflection of their own intelligence. Essentially, their self esteem becomes tied to the outcome of their investments.&nbsp; People also become attached due to the significant time and mental effort put into the research, selection, and management of their investments. This expenditure of personal resources can lead to attachment. This is essentially Sunk Cost Fallacy in action.&nbsp; Social influence is one of the stickier attachments because you’re no longer just dealing with yourself. Groupthink is a powerful thing, and it becomes easy to just follow the crowd instead of doing your own critical thinking. There’s also a shame component where members of a group can make you feel bad for wanting to sell and you may even lose your social standing as a result. I would argue that collectibles may even cause more emotional attachment than other markets due to the added layer of nostalgia associated with the IP. Nostalgia around collectibles brings us back to childhood. It reminds us of a simpler time when we felt safe. Nostalgia is incredibly powerful, and that feeling of safety can be extremely hard to give up.&nbsp; For someone who grew up with Spider-Man as their favorite character, it’s generally going to be harder for them to let go of their favorite Spidey collectible than some random stock or cryptocurrency. There are certainly other reasons for emotional investing, but I’ll stop there for now. Now, how do we avoid letting emotion run our investments? The answer is simple, but often difficult to execute: make a plan and then stick to it. Before you even get into an investment, create an exit strategy. Decide what price levels you want to set stop losses and take profits at and then follow through no matter what. This allows you to trade with a cool head and completely remove emotion from the equation.&nbsp; Making sure your portfolio is properly diversified is also extremely important. Not only does this reduce your overall risk, but it makes it so you won’t be nearly as emotionally impacted by the performance of any single investment. In addition, employing automation tools that can execute trades based on pre-set criteria totally removes the emotional element from the situation.&nbsp; Another strategy for preventing emotion from running your investments is to buy multiples of something. Let’s say you buy a few identical collectibles. If the value goes up enough, you could sell one or two of them to get your initial investment back. Now there’s no longer any risk tied to the trade and you can either gamble on the value continuing to go up, or just keep the items for your collection. This obviously applies to fungible assets like stocks or cryptocurrencies as well.&nbsp; David Yu, CEO &amp; Co-Founder of VeVe Digital Collectibles, has a similar strategy for collectibles which I love. Whenever possible, he buys three of the same collectible. One to sell, one to trade, and one to keep. This way he can be unemotional about selling or trading because he knows he’ll still have one for his personal collection no matter what.&nbsp; In conclusion, while it’s natural to become emotionally attached to our investments, especially in the world of collectibles, it’s crucial to maintain a disciplined approach. Do your best not to let things like temporary euphoria or social pressure dictate your actions and stay committed to your long-term strategy. By applying these principles, you can protect your investments and make more informed, objective decisions, ensuring that your financial goals remain on track regardless of market conditions. What does NOSTALGIA mean for brands? &nbsp;It seems more than ever many people wish for a return to simpler times. Let’s not kid ourselves – we feel digital burnout, information overload and (global) crisis fatigue. &nbsp;This is why many brands are now using nostalgia to reconnect with their audiences and remind them why they started using the brand's products or services in the first place.I’ve been a ‘digital ad guy’ for over 20 years. &nbsp;Going a bit further back, say, since the dawn of time, advertising’s goal really hasn’t changed much - stand out, drive some awareness &amp; interest, then generate a response. &nbsp;Go visit your local park space in the spring where Peacocks nail this strategy to perfection, if you’d like a more naturally occurring example!More recently though, a lot of “human” advertising has felt a bit, mundane. "Check-boxed” commercials, recycled elements, overly repetitive &amp; invasive, made-for-ads websites (MFAs), overused-AI…the risk of annoyance is a fine line to success. &nbsp;Remember the Covid-19 Pandemic, how networks pushed out new content FAST just to keep us from cancelling our services, but the quality suffered? &nbsp;Yeah…that kind of mundane.Then, like a blast from Cyclops, Coca-Cola has again shattered expectations with its latest collaboration, teaming with Marvel to create a nostalgia-infused TV commercial experience that in my humblest opinion, is nothing short of Dazzling. Taking a quick mental break, she is suddenly whisked away into an augmented-reality adventure with Marvel characters. &nbsp;I really liked this transition - after all, aren’t comics SUPPOSED to ignite the reader’s imagination? &nbsp;Dang, it even brought back memories of BIG BANG THEORY LoL!The seamless integration of Coke’s timeless charm (and ad budgets) with Marvel comic characters quickly builds a blend of nostalgia and excitement. As the first scene unfolds, X-Men enthusiasts will be put off - we know the Juggernaut is NOT the same size as Godzilla, nor seemingly unable to speak. Yet, I get it this was done to showcase a very physically strong villain and create immediate awe &amp; concern to those who may not otherwise be familiar with the character.Hurtling a Waste Management garbage truck down the street (a little product placement, maybe?), THE FALCON quickly saves a headphone-engrossed, unsuspecting citizen enjoying her time on a bench. &nbsp;Obviously pissed, Juggernaut stomps an enormous boot sending shockwaves back through the LCS and igniting a very KEY character off the cover of his recently released comic...<h2>DAREDEVIL </h2><figure id="figure-p34rlx32iclwg88baq" data-full-width=""><img id="p34rlx32iclwg88baq" src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/2eKDhaLKIsBfyUyNXqQKcDnUapZj946Sb3iAxfg79o5hqwOuvTzCTjYIVusFaupz.png" alt="daredevil" title="daredevil" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-lg md:rounded-xl lg:rounded-2xl" style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: undefined undefined;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="16:9" data-caption="" data-positionx="undefined" data-positiony="undefined" data-fullwidth="true" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/2eKDhaLKIsBfyUyNXqQKcDnUapZj946Sb3iAxfg79o5hqwOuvTzCTjYIVusFaupz.png" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: undefined undefined;"></figure>For those of you who know me, you know Matt is my all-time favourite street level hero, so yeah, ¦when I saw this it was BILLY CLUB HOOK, LINE &amp; SINKER getting my attention fully focused!The way the scene then integrates DD’s “radar vision” to assess the threat, problem &amp; potential outcome was exactly as it should have been. &nbsp;It was, to me at least, comic perfect. &nbsp;Moreover, if you hadn’t heard already, <a data-mce-href="https://www.cbr.com/daredevil-born-again-episode-count-change/" href="https://www.cbr.com/daredevil-born-again-episode-count-change/">Daredevil Season IV on Disney+</a> is expected to see between 13-18 episodes in 2025, so the speculation hints are starting!Further, check out the book DD animates out of his own comic book cover - it sure looks like (an edited) version of Daredevil #1 (2023) by Writer Saladin Ahmed &amp; Artist Aaron Kuder. &nbsp;DID YOU KNOW this book is also available in VERY limited digital release on the new <a data-mce-href="https://www.veve.me/comics/issue/b1d33e63-0855-4acc-b10f-ca0b58095482" href="https://www.veve.me/comics/issue/b1d33e63-0855-4acc-b10f-ca0b58095482">VeVe Comics Site</a>? Marvel comic fan, reader, digital collector, and marketer, I was captivated by the sheer brilliance of the storytelling. &nbsp;It pays respect to comic fans, while encouraging new audiences to enjoy and participate with both brands. &nbsp;Add in an orchestral Marvel theme into the background and well, you know my take!<h2>DIGITAL ASSETS, A/R, NFT CAMPAIGNS...NOT NEW TO COCA-COLA!</h2> What truly sets the strategy apart is its innovative use of augmented reality (AR) technology to deepen its overall engagement potential. It's a testament to the universal appeal of these iconic brands' ability to forge connections with audiences across generations.<h2>A FEW MINOR ISSUES</h2> A friend, creative designer expert &amp; HULK-level collector commented the commercial has some ambiguity regarding the product itself though. &nbsp;Would consumers know it's about promoting the cans, or was this about movie &amp; comic experiences? &nbsp;Fair enough, but arguably maybe that was the point…Also, pay attention at the grocery store, as it might end up being the same hero on all cans in the box (I need to check this myself). &nbsp;If so, this could have been a major collectibles opportunity - for instance, maybe in every 1000th random box there exists a very limited edition can…a specific hero with maybe just 1000 total in existence to pump up the prize winning opportunities.I know a lot of gigs can challenge the 'ol boredom meter, but working at a comic book shop? Every time I've ever visited my LCS the staff are like superheroes themselves. Always smiling, waving, asking to help, busy doing LCS 'stuff...'
